Very large xf_rm_resource_download table

Our site has lots of downloads, of lots of resource versions, by lots of users...
As a result xf_rm_resource_download (plus its index) is many GB in size and still growing.
Are there any mitigations for this?

My understanding is that I can't just prune the file, because of how other things fit together (e.g. resource ratings), but hopefully I've misunderstood.
