Options for Homepage/Portals

Hello, this is the first time I install XF.
I want to make a cool homepage where I highlight good threads and videos content.
So far I saw this Page as portal homepage
But I don't have content yet to see how it looks.

And i also saw the paid Xenporta addon. Which looked great. Should i just get that and move on or not?
Ideas?
