is there any affordable chat API?

I'm aiming to create a simple chat app with core features like one-on-one messaging, voice messages, and read receipts. However, most real-time communication APIs I've encountered have monthly costs exceeding $200. Are there more affordable options (around $30 per month) that can handle 1,000-5,000 users? Or would it be feasible to build a custom solution? Alternatively, is Supabase or Mirrorfly a viable choice for this scale?
