Custom sidebar how to highlight active link/section

How do I highlight the active section (menu houses links to various forums using class="blockLink) in a custom sidebar as below: (is-selected is added manually to first link which shows below. I want it conditional if its active <a href="/" class="blockLink is-selected">Home</a>)
