classes with same code?

Today, I looked at an add-on; thread and forum are being extended.
Both extensions are exactly the same except for one line (and the header, of course).
Does it have to be like that?

How can i have the entities inside my listener to have Thread or Forum depending from where i call the Listener?

Thread:
thread=>node_id

Forum:
node_id
