Changing structure of forum list

I am using Shades of Blue/Grey template, which I love. However, I was wondering about having an option for users to have the forum list in two columns. An example would be like on the AVForums.

Can you mix and match like that? If so, any recommendation on a free forum template for 2.3 that does a two column style?
